Stories about technology becoming self-aware and wreaking havoc on us comparably incompetent humans have been done before (Come with me if you want to live, anyone?), but don’t let the fear of an overdone premise stop you from reading Chronicles of Kilix by T.K. Chapin.
This book stands out as a fun, futuristic, character-driven read. Chapters written from the point-of-view of both Kilix and Loren moved the story along while showing us the same events from different perspectives. The author struck a good balance with the tech/computer concepts throughout the story by not going too in depth with them or glossing over them either. The focus of the story remained on the characters’ thoughts, challenges, and triumphs, while, in the background, the A.I themes bolstered the narrative.
In other words, if you’ve never written a line of Quirpy code in your life (and it’s a pretty safe bet you haven’t) you can still read this book without getting overwhelmed by the tech. As to whether or not the tech will overwhelm Kilix and company– pick this one up and find out.
